ABOUT OUR CASA

Only the Brave, Only the Strong!

The tale of the legendary University House (UH) dates back to 1919 when it was opened in Gardens, near the Hiddingh Campus. Its name was bestowed upon it by the original warden Professor Lawrence Crawford. Over the years UH has proved to resilient despite a number of temporary closures and relocations. UH no longer resides in this location - as it was closed in 1937 and is now the site of Gardens Commercial High School.

University House was Built in 1946 as a temporary structure to house returning servicemen following World War II, University House houses 112 men in six blocks from 1946 but sadly, G-Block, the building that housed the legendary pub "Opstaan" was removed and so UH houses 108 at the moment.

The residence was then moved to lower campus where it was again eventually closed to accomodate the opening of the UCT Graduate School of Business. After such a storied past it is now located (as it has been since 1958) on 1 Matopo Road in a structure originally built as a temporary housing for WWII servicemen in 1946.

The location on Matopo Road was originally intended to house graduate and more mature students but is now of UCT's first teir residences.

University House’s five blocks house 107 men in single rooms and is within easy walking distance of Upper Campus.

UH is situated off Rhodes Avenue and Matopo Road, Mowbray, opposite Mostert's Mill. Near Forest Hill and Varietas. It still and always will be the best residence at the University of Cape Town.

As an all-male residence, we know that we need to be more understanding and sensitive towards sexual diversity. This is why we take every opportunity to learn.
